Conversations With My Spawn: After School Activities

Friday, September 16th, 2011

Jack played his first football game last night. The team did a pretty good job, but they ended up losing. In the car on the way home, the kids and I had a conversation about sports and after school activities.

Me: Jack, did you have fun? Do you like playing football.
Jack: Yes
Me: Do you like playing football or baseball better?
Jack: Baseball, because it isn’t as much hard work. Actually my favorite thing has been t-ball. Maybe I’ll play that again next year.

I am going to have the only varsity t-ball player. Do they have college scholarships for that?

Me: Max, would you like to play basketball?
Max: Nooooo, I don’t want to play anything.
Me: I got the paperwork to sign you up for Cub Scouts. Does that sound fun?
Max: Nooooo
Jack: Max, cub scouts would be fun. You can shoot bow and arrows.
Max: Nooooo, then I would have to go camping too. I just want to lay on the couch.
Stella: Max, laying on the couch is boring. I’m going to be a girl scout and a cheerleader and play soccer and do Taekwondo.
Max: I want to go to bed. What time is it? I’m going to sleep on the floor as soon as I get home. I won’t be able to make it to my bed.

Max did make it to his bed. Barely.

“Weally?”

Last night I let Stella Bella sleep with me since Scott is out of town. I find it funny that when he is on business trips, the kids tell everyone, “my daddy is on vacation.” That lucky duck sure takes a lot of vacations!

While we were laying down getting ready to fall asleep, I told Stella I was so happy that I had a girl. That I loved her brothers too, but she was special and that we would always be best friends. I told her, “You are smart and beautiful and you can do whatever you want.”

She replied, “Weally? Serweeously? I’m going to get a brownie.”

Conversations With My Spawn: The Jack Edition

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

Jack made me breakfast in bed this morning.  First he brought in my toast.  4 slices covered with butter and jelly.  Then came my fruit salad, which looked a little funny.  He told me that he cut up bananas and strawberries and then mixed in yogurt.  That didn’t sound so bad. Then he told me that he got the yogurt from the freezer and that it had something moldy growing on top, so he scraped it off into the garbage can.  Then he couldn’t get the yogurt out because it was frozen.  So he put it in the microwave.  He is standing over me waiting for me to take my first bite, and Scott is kicking me under the covers and whispering that I should not eat microwaved, moldy yogurt.  I took a little bite of a banana and said, “Yuuummmyy!.”  And threw the rest in the garbage.  Jack is such a sweet boy, but maybe not destined to go into the culinary arts.

A few nights ago we had the whole family at the dinner table.  I took the opportunity to let the kids know that Princess Izzy was doing good.  That she got her new liver and that she was in the hospital waiting to get all better and come home.  They had a million questions.  I told them that the doctors had to open her belly up to put her new liver in, and then they closed it back up with stitches.  Jack said, “That is just silly.  Why did they have to cut her belly to give her a new liver?”  I said, “How else would they get it in there?”  He said, “Why couldn’t she just swallow it and then move around a lot until it got into the right place in her belly.”

Jack used his birthday money to buy 2 rodents, aka gerbils.  They are named Speedy and Snickers, and they actually are kind of cute and not as rodenty as I originally thought they would be.  I am guessing that Jack is already getting disenchanted with them.  I found this contract that is apparently transferring guardianship of Speedy to Max.  At least he put in a clause ensuring that Max must take good care of him.
